Roar into the Year of the Dragon!

Commissioned by the University of British Columbia, I was tasked to create a piece of art to ring in the Year of the Dragon with full creative carte blanche. Working with Matt Warburton, the Design Manager at UBC Brand and Marketing department, I created this fun illustration.

In celebration of the Lunar New Year, I sought to capture the essence of the Year of the Dragon through my art piece. Traditionally revered as a symbol of power, wisdom, and strength, I aimed to present the dragon in a fresh light, showcasing its playful and spirited nature.

My portrayal of the dragon goes beyond its majestic presence; it embodies vitality and exuberance, roaring into the new year with an undeniable sense of swagger. Through bold strokes and vibrant colors, I aimed to convey the dragon’s zest for life, its readiness to embrace new beginnings with enthusiasm.

In this artwork, the dragon emerges as a charismatic figure, radiating energy and confidence. Its playful demeanor invites viewers to join in the festivities, to revel in the joy and excitement of the Lunar New Year. With each brushstroke, I aimed to evoke a sense of celebration and anticipation, as we embark on a journey filled with promise and possibility.

Ultimately, my goal was to challenge traditional perceptions of the dragon, presenting it not only as a symbol of power but also as a creature that knows how to have fun. As we welcome the Year of the Dragon, may this artwork serve as a reminder to embrace life with vigor and to approach the future with a sense of adventure and delight.

Here are the rough concept drawings I presented and the UBC team picked the walking Dragon with full swagger on the bottom. What a fun and cool little project to work on!
