Hong Kong Sketch Book Diaries. The Black Ink Series.

Written by . Filed under Drawings, Blogging. Tagged , , . Comments Off on Hong Kong Sketch Book Diaries. The Black Ink Series..

Here’s a quick and small black ink series of Hong Kong. We’ve been here for almost 2 months now but it really feels like we just arrived last week. There’s just so much to do here! Hong Kong is seriously an incredible city. So vibrant and rich with culture, arts tech and more. You can be in central surrounded by the hippest cafes and restaurants and then you can be literally in another world within 15-20 min. by boat to a quiet fishing village (more on that in another post). We feel like we’ve only seen 1% of HK during this entire time here.

We’re here until the 27th and then we’ll be back in Vancouver to jump back into the thick of it. If you need immediate assistance with any current projects with us, please contact our incredible Studio Manager, Aiken. She’ll sort you out. Thanks for reading our blog.

Blade running with my Nikon in Wan Chai, Hong Kong.

Had a free night to walk explore and walk around Wan Chai district in Hong Kong after a nice meal at Osteria Marzia (thanks for the dinner Pak!) and captured these pics with my Nikon D600 and vintage Nikkor glass (50mm F1.4 non-ai). Without a tripod, I used hand rails and any flat solid surface I could find for these 8-15 sec. long exposures. I swear, I can spend months here just shooting in HK. What a beautiful and vibrant city.

Much like athletes, illustrators need to do warm-ups that act like training exercises by doing quick illustrations for fun. It helps loosen fingers, the wrist and more importantly, the mind.

Did this quick sketch before tackling a commercial project in Hong Kong. This piece is based on a photo I took with my Google Pixel while in Causeway Bay. I ABSOLUTELY love drawing with this pental brush pen. Nothing beats the feeling of an old school brush pen hitting on Moleskine paper.

Sometimes I pinch myself because I still can’t believe this is my temporary office view in Hong Kong. Caught today’s magic hour (with my trusty old Nikon D600 and Nikkor 50mm F1.8) as I was catching up with emails. Been working and living here since Jan 7th and it seems like there’s no end to exploring new things on this tiny Hong Kong island. We’ll be meeting the good folks at Ogilvy & Mather this Thursday.

Been back in Hong Kong for a week now and was reminded how beautiful the birds are here. I have no idea what type of birds we’re seeing but they’re gorgeous. I wish I brought my telephoto lens out here but for now, I’ll just have fun illustrating them as I see them. This particular one had a really long tail and was just chilling out in a local urban park in Sai Wan Ho. Follow our journey on the gram.

Here’s a fun little process video of my illustartion.

Restless and sleepless in Hong Kong tonight.

Feeling restless on our last night in Hong Kong before we head back to Vancouver tomorrow I went out to take a few long exposures by the waterfront in SOHO East. Lugging only a gorilla pod and a Nikkor 50mm F1.4 I snapped a few exposures ranging from 5 to 20 second shots and quickly doodled on them on my iPad. What a time to be alive! I’ll also be heading to Toronto the next day for a client meeting on Tuesday. Too many time zones in such a short period of time can’t be good.

75 year old Chinese lady is more of a grandmaster than a grandma.

Met this lady practicing her art one early morning in a park in Hong Kong and had to ask if she could let me snap a few shots. These are the results. Mrs. Wong is 75 years old and after seeing her moves, I’m convinced she can make Jackie Chan run for cover. There’s absolutely no doubt that the future is female. Read More »
