A year in review: 2020 (AKA Dumpster Fire)

Well, what can we say? 2020 is definitely a year we’ll never forget. With a normal start of the year that quickly turned weird and at times even stranger than fiction.

Early on when the pandemic started to hit Canada in March, we had projects put on hold and even cancel on us, but as with change comes opportunity. Our proudest moment to come out of the year was definitely our collaboration with the Vancouver Whitecaps. We were very eager to flex our creative muscles for the greater good, to help out on a great cause. So when we got the call from the Vancouver Whitecaps we were all in.

Our ‘It Takes a Village‘ art print helped raise over $140,000 for the Greater Vancouver Food Bank. Although the year started with some uncertainty, it didn’t take long before projects started firing up again which included ridiculously fun ones like the Snoop Dogg x 19 Crime’s Cali-red launch, Kabam new HQ art installation, FOX suspension apparel art, NFB’s instagram based project called First Photo Here, Toyota Supra art install, SFU’s Beedie Mural art install, Vancouver Mural fest and much more.

Also, a very notable highlight was all the opportunities to collaborate with so many amazing human beings such as the peeps in the collective studio like Hubert Kang, Annie Chen, Aiken Lao and Leah Gregg.

For 5 years straight, I’ve been putting together these short and silly year-end videos to recap all the work we’ve done. Here it is, the mega dumpster fire year, 2020. Hope you dig it. Catch you all in a (hopefully better) year, 2021.

Merry Christmas and happy holidays everyone. What can I say about 2020? This illustration pretty much says it all and was the first thing that came to mind for a visual.

Please note, our studio will be closed from Dec 21st to Jan 4th. Hope you all have a happy, healthy and safe holiday season! Catch you all in 2021!

Although closed, I haven’t forgotten about our year-end video which I’ll be posting here in the next few days so keep an eye for it.

Audrey making art during COVID lockdown.

Here’s a short video of Audrey making her art on a typical COVID lockdown day. Decided to film her lost in her own imaginary world on a lazy Saturday afternoon. Shot through Nikkor F1.4 85mm and F1.8 50mm and edited through Adobe Premiere. Music licensed through Artlist.io.

Audrey can easily crank out 50 drawings in one sitting and on average, she can sit and quietly draw for 2 hours solid. We can’t be more proud of her.

New work showcase. This was a super fun one and the full project showcase is now up on our portfolio section which includes info on our creative process and how we build out our final artwork.

Here are a few close-up images of our ‘Where’s Waldo’ style illustration for the Dairy Farmers of Canada.

Our rebranding illustration work for Munchkin was among one of the winners.
Proud to have two pieces in the latest Applied Arts Illustration 2020 Annual.

Proud to have our work awarded and recognized 5 years straight by Applied Arts magazine. We hand pick all projects that come through our doors and we invest a portion of our earnings into award shows to not only help support a stronger and more engaged creative community but to also help our clients earn further accolades and exposure with the work we do for them. It’s all part of our hype machine.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Came into the studio this morning to see this amazing light casted on to the artwork that I’ve been working on so I grabbed my Nikon and took a few close up shots. Really excited about this branding project that we’re working on from New Zealand. We’re legally not allowed to disclose any other details until the new year so stay tuned for pictures and info soon.

990 Nicola St., Vancouver

Thanks to Frank from Northside Signs for putting up the address numbers designed by our studio mate, Annie Chen of Lemonni. Also, how is it December already? Someone said to me that 2020 is the slowest yet the fastest year ever.

Although the store is closed due to COVID, we’re still working in the studio as much as we can while our studio manager Aiken is working remotely from Calgary. It’s amazing how we can still make things work with everyone being everywhere and that’s only possible with platforms such as SLACK that we all use religiously.

We’ve very grateful to still be insanely busy with so many new projects that continue to flood our inboxes.

My work desk as of yesterday. Trying to map out our workload with many sticky notes to the side.
